Paving Your Future... Literally!

The last thing you'd expect to do after passing your depleted toner cartridges or waste toner containers to Online for recycling is to drive over them with your car. As crazy as that may sound it's actually quite ingeneous. Through the 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' recycling program, Online is assisting in the development of a new product that has the ability to convert leftover or waste toner into road surface. What's more, the recycled material, which is already being deployed out in streets across Australia, makes road surfaces stronger and reduces their carbon emissions. This is good news for both your tyres and the environment!

HOW IT'S DONE

Your old cartridges are shredded down to their raw materials for reuse, while the toner powder is then further refined to make an additive called Modified Toner Polymer (MTP). This MTP helps improve the performance of the asphalt which in turn can potentially lead to lower road maintenance cost. Recycled toner from printer cartridges consists of small particles of very high-grade engineering plastics; the same plastics whach are commonly used to modify bituminous binders for asphalt roads (the tar-like substance).

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Millions of toner cartridges are disposed of every year in Australia and can take between 450 to 1000 years to break down. By taking them to Online, a proud supporter of the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' program, the valuable resources they contain are kept out of landfill and can be put to new uses.
As well as the toner powder, most used toner cartridges contain a variety of valuable materials such as ferrous metal, stainless steel, aluminium, ink, and many types of plastics, all of which can all be recycled.

GET INVOLVED

Over 24 million cartridges, equivalent to 11,000 tonnes of plastics, metals, inks and toners, have been recycled since the 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' began in 2003, and with your help, Online would like to help them reach their goal of 28 million this year!
